DCI and ESPN?
There are rumors floating around in the drum corp community that a deal is in the works for ESPN to broadcast the World Championships. Granted it will not be live, but delivered sometime in the Fall. The major advantages being that Finals would be shown to a wider audience and broadcast once as opposed to varied times based on PBS affiliates' schedules.
This has been discussed in the community for years as we have watched other obscure "sports" being broadcast on ESPN and its affiliates - the latest being World Championship Poker. Is that a sport? Is drum corp a sport? If you have participated in the activity then you will most definitely argue the physical demands put on the body. Compared to what ESPN is running these days - poker, spelling bees, pool, cheerleading - drum corps is ABSOLUTELY a sport.
Supposedly a deal will be announced soon and we can look forward to an ESPN broadcast of the DCI World Championships. Just pray is doesn't get shuffled to the new (and not as widespread) ESPN U.
